A New Art Season

“Strait Ahead,” 24 x 36, acrylic on canvas

This is Minnesota so I can’t honestly say we’ve seen the last snow. I did see my first robin but, then, not so sure he ever left. I’ve heard rumors of crocuses but not sure where, but I do know we have more daylight hours and a long list of upcoming art exhibits, fairs, fundraisers and open studios. And the 30th anniversary Art-a-Whirl is just over a month away. Will the new global tariffs impact the price of paint and canvas? No doubt. Can I reuse old canvases? Find collage materials in the recycle bin? I hope so. New art does not require new materials. Just new ideas.

Meanwhile we need art in all its forms more than ever. Turn off CNN, take a break from Facebook, skim past the daily list of new executive orders, if just for the weekend, and pretend you are a tourist. Maybe a foreign tourist. Check out a new music venue, a gallery opening, a flower show. Or a Second Saturday at Casket Arts. Everyone welcome.

Second Saturday Open Studios at Casket Arts, April 12 (11 am – 4 pm)

Our monthly “open house” returns next Saturday, and I can tell our tenant artists are busy preparing new work in anticipation of Art-a-Whirl (May 16-18). Some of those new wares, as well as older works, will be on display throughout the Casket campus for Second Saturday. I am happy to have a returning guest artist in Studio 218, ceramicist Kathy Johnston. Kathy has been posting a lot of new items with stunning new glazes, so do come check her out! Early afternoon, I also welcome back my guest musician, guitarist Mike Wolter, playing approximately 1-2:30 pm. And I will have some new work as well, including “Strait Ahead” (above), which incidentally is a reworking of a painting I thought I finished a year ago. (No, I was wrong, in fact I only preserved the color palette.) 681 17th Av NE, Minneapolis.

Art-a-Whirl®, May 16-18
It’s the biggest outdoor art crawl in the U.S., now celebrating its 30th anniversary May 16-18! With participation from about 1000 visual artists throughout the Northeast Arts District, and estimates of 100,000 visitors, it is indeed a big event. Visual art of every sort is represented, as well as local musicians, food and drink vendors, and more. Sponsored by the Northeast Minneapolis Artists Association (NEMAA), Art-a-Whirl is the biggest art event in the Twin Cities. Casket Arts as always will be in the middle of it all, with open studios, live music in the 4th floor lobby (Friday night and Saturday), food trucks, the annual Speakeasy fundraiser, studio demonstrations, hands-on activities, and more. More details next month. And yes, Casket will again hold its “Art-a-Whirl Preview” as the May Second Saturday on May 10.

On Exhibit

Burl Gallery “Artistic Kaleidoscope II,” through May 31, Reception April 26, 5-8 pm. Each year this gallery presents juried exhibits based on a general theme that encourages diverse submissions. 2025’s theme, “Artistic Kaleidoscope,” encompasses “transformation through perspective,” “ever-changing possibilities,” “diversity and complexity,” “creativity and imagination,” and “the initiative to sustain beauty”…. “the kaleidoscope is a metaphor for art.” I am pleased that my acrylic mixed media “Classified Documents” was selected for this show. 308 Prince Street, St Paul (Lowertown), www.burlartgallery.org

Hopkins Center for the Arts Annual Members Nonjuried Show, April 11-May 17. Awards Reception April 17, 5-8 pm. The Hopkins Center for the Arts presents its annual Members Nonjuried Spring Exhibition. The show has become so popular that this year, members were only allowed one submission! Many of the area’s finest artists are members here, and this show offers a wide range of processes and media, from sculpture to printmaking to oil and acrylics and more. Nonjuried for entry, the show is juried for awards. My mixed media “Tipping Point” will also be included in the show. 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins; www.hopkinsartscenter.com

Minnesota Artists Association Annual Spring Juried Show, Phipps Center for Arts (Hudson, WI), through April 19. MAA hosts two juried members’ shows each year, and the 2025 spring show moves across the border to the stellar galleries of the Phipps. In addition to the MAA show, several other galleries boast the work of artists Linda Snouffer, Bebe Keith, Kat Nottingham and Attila Roy Dabasi during this time period. I’m honored to have my abstract landscape “Daybreak: North Coast” included in the MAA exhibit. Note the Phipps is just a 30-minute ride down I-94 from downtown Minneapolis and no passports needed. 109 Locust Street, Hudson; thephipps.org

Yes, it is a busy spring. In addition to our campus events, I am always available by appointment if you prefer a more private visit or are unable to make it to Second Saturday. No purchase necessary for a studio visit! Just set up a time with me, via email, phone, text…
