A Last Blast of Summer, A First Look at Fall Art
"Mesa Vista” 24 x 36 acrylic on canvas.
I’m writing this as we go into our third day of an ominous federal government shutdown. I hope it will be over by the time you read this but I am not optimistic. I particularly remember a past shutdown, maybe 2013? My brother and sister-in-law and I were exploring the Big Sur coast, and discovered the national park service parking lot closed at Pfeiffer Beach. We followed the “crowd” and parked on adjacent private property with our fingers crossed and enjoyed an amazing sunset along one of the most beautiful stretches of the central California coast. Somehow I don’t expect such memories of this shutdown. How will the 2025 edition impact the arts? Federal arts funding, what’s left of it, might be in danger, at least in “blue states” like Minnesota. Fortunately, Minnesota strongly supports the arts with state appropriations and grants. But artists nevertheless face the same challenges and uncertainties as everyone else—groceries, health care, housing, etc. And we will keep creating and hope that our audiences, listeners, viewers, curators and collectors will continue to support the arts. We all certainly need the arts more than ever.
Although Summer has lingered much longer than usual, the annual fall exhibition season is well underway; the St Paul Fall Art Crawl takes place this coming weekend along with Second Saturday at Casket Arts, and throughout the Northeast Arts District, we are starting preparations for our annual mid-November open studio weekend. I’ve had a productive September and look forward to showing the results to visitors. I also hope to share some recent work through several group exhibits around the metro.
Second Saturday Open Studios at Casket Arts, October 11
Typically there seems to be a burst of new energy on display at our October Second Saturday at Casket, as artists open their doors to show the results of summer projects and welcome familiar and new visitors. Most metro construction projects are finished or at least less of a barrier, making it much easier to get around to art studios in Northeast Minneapolis. With most of the I-94 construction finished, this weekend should also provide easier logistics if you want to take in some of the St Paul Art Crawl and still drop in for Second Saturday at Casket! (California Building, Northrup King, and some others will also be open on Saturday, October 11.) In Studio 218, I will have some new work hanging—including “Mesa Vista” above and “Delta” below; I will also host one of the most in-demand guitarists in the metro, Joel Shapira, playing from about Noon-1:30 p.m. You can find more new paintings, note cards, and framed mini-prints—and it’s the last day of my “30% Off Most Everything” sale. (That’s most everything over $50.) 681 17th Av NE, Mpls.
“Delta” 30 x 40, acrylic on canvas.
Plan Ahead! Open Casket November 14-16; Holiday Market December 13
Many artists in Northeast Minneapolis will be getting ready for the annual “Fall Open Studios” events coming November 14-16. Casket Arts (Open Casket), Northrup King (Art Attack), California Building (California Dreamin’), Solar Arts (Art This Way) and more celebrate art and the fall season. It’s like a smaller Art-a-Whirl with art, food trucks, live music, and special art activities with more manageable crowds and parking. If you remember Art-a-Whirl in its earlier days, this is more like that! Save the dates and more details coming next month. (Weekend hours at Casket—Friday 5-9 p.m.; Saturday Noon-8 p.m.; Sunday Noon-5 p.m.) Also note, Casket Arts will host an “Open Casket Preview” on Second Saturday, November 8!
Our annual Holiday Market at Casket Arts will fall on Second Saturday, December 13. Mark your calendars now—it will be a festive Saturday with special activities/treats on each floor, original art including holiday items, and Corner Coffee will be on hand with hot drinks and cookies. We will be open 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
On Exhibit
Annual Members’ Juried Exhibition, Hopkins Center for the Arts, through October 19. This is one of my favorite exhibits every year due to the relatively small selection of art from area artists I admire. Thus I am always very happy when my work is included. My early summer project, a triptych (“Primary Objectives”) was selected for this show. In the main gallery, open Monday-Saturday. 1111 Mainstreet, Hopkins; www.hopkinsartcenter.org
Minnesota Artists Association Annual Fall Juried Exhibition, White Bear Center for the Arts (Exhibition Hall and Atrium), through October 31. MAA presents two juried exhibitions each year, rotating among area art centers and galleries. I am pleased to have two works included this fall, “September Shore” and “Blue Phantazzo.” I’m very pleased that “September” received an Honorable Mention. Open Monday-Saturday; 4971 Long Av, White Bear Lake; www.whitebeararts.org
“Everything Metal”, Dow Art Gallery and Frameshop through October 30. The Dow has been hosting some interesting exhibitions lately, including the current “Everything Metal.” Every work has some component of metal, from photos printed on aluminum to mixed media and collaged works that include metal scraps, metallic fabrics, computer parts, etc to metal sculpture and wire mesh garments. Everything metal! I am pleased to have three works, all mixed media pieces mixing metals with paper, paint and other materials (see “Remnants” below). Open Monday-Saturday. 2242 University Av West, St Paul; www.dowartgallery.com
Remnants" 18 x 24, mixed media on wood panel.
