Artful Season

“First Snow" (24 x 36, acrylic on canvas)

Here we go again, the season of holidays, reunions, family gatherings, first snowfalls, dropping temps (at least here in the Midwest), Black Friday, Cyber Monday… what did I miss? Oh, holiday art markets! It started with Small Business Saturday and seems that from this point through December, there are markets, fairs, and pop-up shops promoting a wide variety of original (and unoriginal) art and particularly crafts. Original art is not necessarily the first thing on the top of your gift-giving list, although it might be on the top of the list you hope to receive! It can be challenging to shop for an original artwork to give, because art is so personal. Yet it’s often more fun to look through works of art than piles of sweaters and socks as you seek that perfect gift for someone special. And if nothing else, shopping at an art gallery or pop-up market makes for a nice break between rounds of sweaters, socks and electronics! And maybe you will find something special that you will add to your own list! (And you might need to get something special for yourself come January!) Happy shopping.

Casket Arts Second Saturday: Holiday Market. December 14, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.!

The Casket Arts campus held our Second Saturday Open Studio day every month in 2024, including the recent Open Casket weekend and our upcoming Holiday Market on December 14. First, thanks to all who came to Casket Arts for Open Casket. We hope you enjoyed yourself, picked out some art, and perhaps noticed a few works that you want to check out again as you do your final holiday shopping. Holiday Market is like a bigger version of Second Saturday—more studios will be open, Corner Coffee will be back with a great list of hot beverages (and cookies), each floor will sport its own decorations, and I will again have live music in Studio 218. Also in #218, you will find some new and recent works in all sizes—including a Holiday Market special on my 12 x 12 panels ($50 each); small and not so small hand-painted clay flower pots (for a plant or whatever—makes a nice receptacle for pencils, markers, chopsticks….); notecard gift packs. And my music will be reason enough to visit for a while—both Joan Griffith and Joel Shapira, two of the area’s finest jazz guitarists, will be on hand, separately and together, during the afternoon. So stop by—even if you finished shopping, think of it as a stop on a studio tour. Or jazz gig. Note this Saturday extends to 5 p.m. Second Saturdays will be back in 2025—every month starting January 11th!

Continuing, On Exhibit
I am participating in two exhibits that continue through mid-January:

Wyoming Creative Community Annual “That’s What Eye Saw,” Hallberg Center for the Arts, through January 18, 2025. The 11th annual photography exhibit features an eclectic display of photography, from black and white to color to digital, from straight-ahead portraits to creative digital manipulations. Two of my digital manipulations will be on display, including “Straight River Winter” (a composite of three photos in color and black and white) and “Birchometry,” a digitally enhanced close-up of colorful North Shore birch bark. Open 2-8 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, 12-6 p.m. Saturday. 5521 E. Viking Blvd, Wyoming, MN; https://wyomingcreativearts.org

White Bear Center for the Arts Annual Members Exhibition, Ford Family Gallery and Exhibition Hall, through January 17, 2025. One of the area’s most active art centers, White Bear hosts its annual members’ nonjuried show, drawing a wide array of talents from across the metro. The show fills the two main galleries of the center. My imaginary landscape “Low Tide” is included in this show. Open Monday-Saturday, see website for hours. 4971 Long Av, White Bear Lake; https://whitebeararts.org

Visitors Always Welcome! It’s a long stretch now between Holiday Market and the annual Art-a-Whirl in May, and I plan to use the time to launch at least one new project and add to several others. In addition to our Second Saturdays, I am always open by appointment. And you can feel free to drop in unannounced but I can’t guarantee my hours or if any other studios will be open for visits. But I definitely enjoy having friends, friends of friends, past customers, and potential customers visit the studio—come to see what I’ve been doing since your last visit, talk about a possible commission, or just come and catch up! There’s no purchase required. If you haven’t seen my work since I was primarily displaying photography, I would really enjoy showing you my “new” art. (And I still have some photography on display!)

Just call or email ahead and stop by! I’ll have tea and coffee and a cozy space for you.
