New Year's Resolution

“Peculiar Galaxy” (Acrylic and Monotype on paper, 15 x 21)

I don’t plan to make a long list of goals for my art, or “resolutions”, for 2025. I find it counterproductive to make specific plans for creation—I can make a list of general ideas, such as experimenting further with collage using clear duralar or attempting more works on paper. But setting more specific parameters seems self-defeating, as I find more success when I let a work develop spontaneously. In 2025, I want to try some new materials, new tools, new combinations of materials and processes. I want to submit more proposals for individual shows. I want to see more exhibits at our wonderful array of art galleries and museums. And I want to make more productive use of my time, which means blocking out more scheduled “work” time in the studio. Let’s see how it goes!

Second Saturdays! January 11, 11 am - 4 pm. With the new year comes monthly Open Studios at Casket Arts, every second Saturday from 11 am – 4 pm. (Our November event is part of Open Casket weekend; the December event is our annual Holiday Market.) January 11th marks the first event of the year. I’ll be featuring the solo jazz guitar of one of the metro area’s finest, Chris Olson, playing from about 1-2:30. I’ll have some new works, including "Peculiar Galaxy" (at the top of this newsletter). There are always more studios open throughout the campus, and there are always other open studio events in the area—the Northrup King Building is open every Saturday; the California Building is open Second Saturdays (except July and August). Saturday can be your “Art Day!”

On Exhibit

Closing Soon: White Bear Center for the Arts Annual Members Exhibition, Ford Family Gallery and Exhibition Hall, through January 17, 2025. One of the area’s most active art centers, White Bear hosts its annual members’ nonjuried show, drawing a wide array of talents from across the metro. The show fills the two main galleries of the center. My imaginary landscape “Low Tide” is included in this show. Open Monday-Saturday, see website for hours. 4971 Long Av, White Bear Lake; https://whitebeararts.org

Closing Soon: Wyoming Creative Community Annual “That’s What Eye Saw,” Hallberg Center for the Arts, through January 18, 2025. The 11th annual photography exhibit features an eclectic display of photography, from black and white to color to digital, from straight-ahead portraits to creative digital manipulations. Two of my digital manipulations will be on display, including “Straight River Winter” (a composite of three photos in color and black and white) and “Birchometry,” a digitally enhanced close-up of colorful North Shore birch bark. Open 2-8 Tuesday-Friday, 12-6 Saturday. 5521 E. Viking Blvd, Wyoming, MN; https://wyomingcreativearts.org

Northrup King Building Gallery 322, “Feline Fantastica 2: A Cat Show, January 18 and 25. Cat art and activities features work from artists from Northrup King and other area studios.”This year we will have a rescue on hand, The Bitty Kitty Brigade, an amazing rescue that finds and cares for abandoned kittens and gets them ready for adoption. Like last year, we will have the kitty cubby for coloring and creating your own artwork.” There will also be a “Pawsport” helping you find other cat art throughout the building. I am participating in the exhibit this year with my only two feline works, “Black Cat Loves Sunshine” and “Tabby.” On view Saturdays, January 18 and 25, Noon – 8 pm. Northrup King Building, 1500 Jackson St NE, Minneapolis.

“Tabby,” acrylic on canvas, 20 x 16.

Burl Gallery (formerly A-Z Gallery),”Artistic Kaleidoscope I”, January 25 – March 22, reception February 22, 5-8 pm. Each year this gallery presents juried exhibits based on a general theme that encourages diverse submissions. 2025’s theme, “Artistic Kaleidoscope,” encompasses “transformation through perspective,” “ever-changing possibilities,” “diversity and complexity,” “creativity and imagination,” and “the initiative to sustain beauty”…. “the kaleidoscope is a metaphor for art.” I am pleased that my acrylic mixed media “The Mourning After” was selected for this show. 308 Prince Street, St Paul (Lowertown); www.burlartgallery.org

Hope to see you soon!

The holidays are over, there hasn’t been enough snow for most winter sports, and it’s way too early to be thinking about the garden season. Is there a better time to enjoy some fresh art? I think winter provides a great time to explore galleries and museums, usually without crowds. Whether you are just in the mood for some visual stimulation or are casually—or seriously—thinking about an art purchase, consider a studio visit. And if time permits, consider a small studio “tour” on a Second Saturday in the Northeast Arts District where you can always find at least three studio buildings open. I am almost always available by appointment to welcome you to Studio 218, to “tour” the studio, consider a commission, or just drop in to visit. Send me a text or email!
