Art in Uncertain Times

“The New Age of Anxiety”, 30 x 40, mixed media on canvas.

In the past two weeks we have been bombarded with daily—even hourly—threats of change, from the price of eggs to the availability of supportive health systems to the definitions of words in the Constitution. In the arts, the proposed withdrawl of federal funding threatens essential support of individuals and agencies. How can we focus on creative, often life-affirming activities in this new “helter skelter” environment? Because, we have to. Self expression is an essential weapon against tyranny in any form. Creative endeavors—in visual art, music, literature, theater, dance, etc.—allow the sharing of ideas, the expression of emotion, our connections to each other. And regardless of external pressures, artistic expression has historically survived the worst of times. That doesn’t mean it will be “business as usual” in the studios, galleries, museums, or concert halls. There’s a good chance that paint and canvas, likes eggs and gasoline, will cost more; that building owners will raise studio and gallery rents to cover higher energy costs and taxes; that there might even be some degree of censorship regarding how art is funded or displayed. But art gives us a way to fight back, to preserve and move forward, regardless. It might be more difficult. But it might also provide more inspiration. In the past few weeks I have been in creative mode, and my titles reflect my sources of inspiration (as well as aggravation!), like “The New Age of Anxiety” above. And more in the studio during the upcoming Second Saturday!

In Time for Valentine’s Day—Second Saturday Open Studios, February 8th!

Get away from the news and give yourself an “Art Day” in Northeast Minneapolis. At Casket Arts, we are holding our monthly Second Saturday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Find some art for your sweetie—or for yourself! In Studio 218, I will have new works of all sizes, a stack of blank notecards appropriate for Valentine’s Day, anniversary (which was the original painting’s intent), or just a little love note (see below), and a special guest artist, ceramicist James Reed. I first met James when he was a toddler! His grandma Cheryl is a long-time friend. James has been studying ceramics and showing his wares, and I am excited to introduce him to Casket visitors this weekend. In the afternoon (around 2 p.m.), pianist Patrick Adkins will be back in my studio playing jazz and original compositions. We’re planning a day of fun and art!

There will be studios open throughout our campus as well as in other buildings in the Northeast Arts District, including Northrup King’s weekly open studios and “Art at the Heart” at the California Building. Give yourself an art tour! Casket Arts, 681 17th Av NE.

On Exhibit

“Artists Kaleidoscope I,” Burl Art Gallery (formerly A-Z Gallery), Lowertown St Paul, through March 22; Reception February 22, 5-8 pm. Each year this gallery presents 4 juried exhibits based on a general theme that encourages diverse submissions. 2025’s theme, “Artistic Kaleidoscope,” encompasses “transformation through perspective,” “ever-changing possibilities,” “diversity and complexity,” “creativity and imagination,” and “the initiative to sustain beauty”… “the kaleidoscope is a metaphor for art.” I am pleased that my acrylic mixed media “The Mourning After” was selected for this first show of 2025. 308 Prince Street, St Paul (Lowertown); www.burlartgallery.org

Give Yourself an “Art Date”

Art is good for us, as creators, curators, gallerists, buyers, and general consumers. Find art that inspires you, soothes you, challenges you – whatever you need. Don’t just read about it or view it on Facebook or Instagram! Get out and enjoy it. Really, it’s better live! And Minnesota still is a haven for the arts.

I hope you will give yourself an “art date” this month and visit Studio 218—during our Second Saturday on February 8th or at a time that works for you. Appointments are advised but I am available most of the month—just email, text or call and we’ll find a time. And please believe me when I say NO PURCHASE NECESSARY or even contemplated to arrange a visit. Come see what I’ve been doing, or just come over and catch up!
