Galleries, Exhibits, and Open Studios!
“Waterpocket Fold” mixed media (fabric, paper, acrylic on canvas), 24 x 36
November is shaping up to be the busiest for my studio in the ten years (!) I’ve been leasing at Casket Arts! In addition to our annual Open Casket Open Studios event (November 13-15), I am preparing for the opening of my solo show “Modern Distractions” at Ambiente Gallerie (November 22) and our upcoming Holiday Market (December 5). We had a good turnout for the opening of “Eyes Wide Open” at the Groveland Gallery with a follow-up artist panel discussion at the gallery (November 28, see below). There’s been a flurry of calls for exhibit submissions and I have a few new works ready to display (including “Waterpocket Fold” at the top – another fabric experiment). Hopefully I will find time to give the studio a good cleaning, new art a coat of varnish, and get this newsletter out!
Casket Arts in all its autumn splendor!
Open Casket Returns November 13-15
Do you like the idea of Art-a-Whirl but not the crowds? The second weekend of November has long been devoted to a smaller scale event in the Northeast Arts District, Fall Open Studios. Northrup King Building has its “Art Attack,” California Building has its “California Dreamin,’, Solar Arts has “Art This Way,” and of course the Casket Arts campus holds its “Open Casket.” Some of the smaller studio spaces will also be open. What’s different—mostly the breweries and bars are not part of the festivities. It’s pretty much art, art and more art. Plus food trucks, coffee cart, and live music at Casket where we will have solo and duo acts, mostly jazz, on Friday night and Saturday. Also a feature at Casket Arts is the lower level Speakeasy—cocktails and fundraising for the Northeast Arts District. But the focus is on original art of all sorts. Studio 218 will be open all hours, and I have some new works to share with you, including a set of small (8 x 10) matted abstracts (“Resistance 1-4”, see below), created with oil and cold wax—my first experience with this interesting medium! 681 17th Av NE/1720 NE Madison; Friday 5-9 pm; Saturday Noon-8 pm; Sunday Noon-5 pm; www.casketarts.com

Holiday Market December 5!
Our annual Holiday Market at Casket Arts returns December 5 (11 am – 5 pm). In addition to open studios with a wide range of ideas for unique, original art gifts, there will be festive displays and goodies throughout the campus. (Don’t forget to include yourself on your holiday gift list!) More details next month and on our revamped website at www.casketarts.com
On Exhibit
“Modern Distractions,” solo exhibition at Ambiente Gallerie (Minneapolis), November 22-January 29; opening reception November 22, 2-4 pm. I had one of my first solo exhibitions at this gallery in 2021. Since then, the gallery (inside a chiropractic clinic) has moved into another space off East Hennepin Avenue. But you don’t need an appointment or a back injury to come inside and view the exhibit—open during all business hours. This exhibit of approximately 20 acrylic and mixed media paintings features recent works inspired by the social, political and personal upheavals and “distractions” of the past 5 years, and reflects the bright colors, high energy and metaphysical conflicts that define modern urban life in Minnesota and beyond (see “Fact Check” below). Opening reception features one of the top jazz pianists in the metro, Dale Alexander. 635 SE 9th Street #115, Minneapolis; www.ambientegallerie.com. See open hours (M-W-Th-Fri) on gallery website.

Annual Members Exhibition, White Bear Center for the Arts, November 16-December 19; opening reception December 3, 4-8 pm. This annual nonjuried exhibition fills the two main galleries at WBCA and draws a lot of viewers from the community and beyond. A companion “junior” exhibition takes place in the adjacent Atrium. My landscape “September Shore” will hang with the rest. 4971 Long Av, White Bear Lake; Monday-Thursday 9 am – 7:30 pm; Friday-Saturday 9 am – 4 pm; https://www.whitebeararts.org
“Eyes Wide Open,” Groveland Gallery, Minneapolis, through January 2; artist panel November 28 (2 pm). For the first time, I am exhibiting with a group of other artists from the Groveland Gallery. A rather diverse selection of five of my paintings is included in this show celebrating the energy and vibrancy of color--including my landscape “Sunrise, Hebrides” (below). On November 28, Groveland will present an artist panel (featuring several of the participating artists) discussing “color.” Please note that the historic Groveland Gallery is not handicapped accessible (there are stairs to the front door and a rather steep driveway). 25 Groveland Terrace, Minneapolis; hours Tuesday-Saturday noon- 5 pm. www.grovelandgallery.com

Kathy Snow Stratton, “Revealed” at Veronique Wantz Gallery through November 7. I met Kathy a few years ago when we were both part of an “Abstract Landscape” group show at the Arboretum. Her expansive canvases were filled with minute details—tiny marks, shapes lying beneath another, bolder, larger-patterned layer that convinced me that these were nearly three-dimensional, even collaged works. These paintings need to be viewed from both across the room and three inches away. And if the artist is present, talk to her about her process, her inspiration. 901 North 5th St,, Minneapolis; www.veroniquewantzgallery.com
If you are looking for original art to view, purchase, or gather inspiration, you will find plenty to do this month and next! And if you can’t make it to one of these events, just give me a call or text or email to set up a private time to visit studio 218. I’m in town and available through December and would love to show you new work or just have coffee and chat!
