October 2026: Studio 218 News
“Treble-Ocity” (triptych, 30 x 45 total; mixed media on canvas, black float frame)
Welcome Back to Open Studios at Casket Arts
Casket Arts Open Studio – “Art or Treat,” October 10, 11 am – 4 pm. The artists of Casket Arts campus are pleased to welcome you back after our long summer “vacation.” We’ve been busy throughout the summer creating new work, and for many of us, cleaning and reorganizing our studios for a busy fall schedule! This artist has started several new series of work, including 1) applying dyed/painted drapes of fabric to painted canvas and 2) inspirations drawn from works in the permanent collection of the University of Iowa’s Stanley Museum of Art (see “Treble-Ocity at the top, inspired by the “Elegy” paintings of Robert Motherwell), as well as continuing to explore abstract landscape for the upcoming exhibit “Essence of Place” (August 2027 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts). New works from these series will be on display in Studio 218, with live jazz guitar from Will Schmid from about 1-2:30 pm. Check out my new (and a lot of old) work and explore studios throughout the campus. And there will be treats, of course!
Mark your calendars for our other fall events: The annual “Open Casket” weekend, November 13-15 and Holiday Market, December 5. Open Casket is like a smaller Art-a-Whirl weekend, coinciding with similar happenings at Northrup King Building (“Art Attack”), California Building (“California Dreamin’”), and Solar Arts Building (“Art This Way”), as well as at other studios throughout the Northeast Arts District. At Casket Arts, studios will be open throughout the campus, we will have live music Friday night and Saturday, there will be coffee and cookies as well as food trucks. Casket artists will have demos, guests artists, and special activities throughout the weekend. Our Holiday Market in December is a festive Open Studio day (11 am – 5 pm) with special events and treats throughout campus to enhance your holiday shopping and festivities. More details next month! 681 17th Av NE, Mpls. And visit our renovated website at www.casketarts.com
On Exhibit
12th Annual Black and White Exhibit, Wyoming Creative Community, through October 17 (Hallberg Center for the Arts). I love this nonjuried show! It pushes me (and many other artists) to move out of the comfort of color and explore the many facets and challenges of monochromatic art. This year I submitted a fabric/paint reworking of an older painting, yielding “Betula” (referring to a scientific designation of “Birch”); and a black-and-white digital photo of a rusted junk scrap that suggested the shapes of Motherwell’s series of “Elegies,” “Elegy to Uptown.” Gallery open Tuesday- Saturday. Hallberg Center for the Arts, 5521 E. Viking Blvd, Wyoming MN; www.wyomingcreativearts.org
“Aesthetic Essence IV,” Burl Gallery, Lowertown St Paul, October 3-November 14; opening reception October 17, 6-8 pm. The final installment of this year’s series of juried shows reflecting the broad theme of “aesthetic essence.” Please to have my mixed media landscape “Painted Beach” included. The reception takes place during St Paul Art Crawl weekend. Burl Gallery, 308 Prince Street, Lowertown St Paul; open Saturdays and Sundays 10-4; www.burlartgallery.org
“Painted Beach,” 24 x 30; mixed media on canvas
“Eyes Wide Open,” Groveland Gallery, Minneapolis, October 24-January 31; opening reception October 24, 2-5 pm. For the first time, I will be exhibiting with a group of other artists from the Groveland Gallery. A rather diverse selection of five of my paintings will be included in this show celebrating the energy and vibrancy of color--including my seasonally appropriate “Trick or Treat.” Please note that the historic Groveland Gallery is not handicapped accessible (there are stairs to the front door and a rather steep driveway). 25 Groveland Terrace, Minneapolis; hours Tuesday-Saturday noon- 5 pm. www.grovelandgallery.com
“Trick or Treat,” 30 x 30, acrylic on canvas
Coming Soon!
“Modern Distractions,” solo exhibition at the Ambiente Gallerie, Minneapolis, November 22-January 31; opening reception November 22, 2-4 pm. This is my second show at Ambiente, a chiropractic clinic that adds contemporary local art to its recipe for enhancing physical well being. My first show (2021) was in the original location, and the COVID epidemic precluded a reception. Now located where Southeast and Northeast Minneapolis meet off East Hennepin Av, Ambiente still offers plenty of white wall space and more parking. Modern Distractions”(see “ICE Storm” below) is an overview of my acrylic and mixed media works of the past five years, reflecting the energy, upheaval, protests and confusion of modern society. And this time I can welcome you with an opening reception featuring a special musical guest. Details next month! 635 SE 9th St, Minneapolis.

Around Town
Two shows I’ve enjoyed recently by local artists using highly unique, creative processes--still on view and much worth a look:
Linda Snouffer, “A Prairie Stroll” at the Dow Gallery through October. Linda is dubbed a “botanical printmaker” but that hardly describes her work. Best to read about her processes of incorporating prairie grasses in complex layers yielding landscapes of incredible depth and beauty. And this show isn’t simply gorgeous wall art—it is indeed a prairie stroll through a “forest” of silk and other fabrics hanging from above (and wall hangings as well). Dow Gallery, 2242 University Av W, St Paul; www.dowartgallery.com
Kathy Snow Stratton, “Revealed” at Veronique Wantz Gallery through November 7. I met Kathy a few years ago when we were both part of an “Abstract Landscape” group show at the Arboretum. Her expansive canvases were filled with minute details—tiny marks, shapes lying beneath another, bolder, larger-patterned layer that convinced me that these were nearly three-dimensional, even collaged works. These paintings need to be viewed from both across the room and three inches away. And if the artist is present, talk to her about her process, her inspiration. 901 North 5th St,, Minneapolis; www.veroniquewantzgallery.com
See you this fall!
I’m looking forward to hosting visitors in Studio 218 at our fall events, and I also hope to see you at Groveland! And if none of my event dates work for you, I am always available for a private visit—just email or call to set up an appointment – no strings or expectations attached. And watch for some overdue updates to my website in the coming month!!
